In the middle of the Yangtze River, a playful but endangered creature, often called the “Smiling Angel”, swims gracefully. This is the Yangtze porpoise, which gives hope for the river’s environment. One of the polpoises, known as “No. 1575,” recently found a new guardian and friend: Lenovo.
The Beginning of a Unique Partnership
It all started with a simple but profound question: Can a technology leader like Lenovo have an immediate impact on wildlife conservation? The answer was found in the waters of the Yangtze River, where the survival of finless porpoises was threatened. With the number of dolls alarmingly low—less than 1,000 individuals left in the country—Lenovo’s teams realized the urgent need for action.
In 2021, Lenovo’s cooperation with Tian’ezhou Reserve and the contribution of China’s first smart IT environmental protection solution marked an important step in their commitment to biodiversity. In pursuit of this project, Lenovo decided to adopt “No. 1575,” a small female porpoise. Female porpoises play an important role in the species’ recovery, to facilitate the sustainability and future growth of the population. Lenovo’s commitment to “No. 1575” goes beyond adoption and includes ensuring a successful return to the wild. Partnering with the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation, Lenovo combines technology and nature conservation.
Meeting “No. 1575”
In April 2024, “No. 1575” underwent a health check-up, revealing her to be a healthy female child, 138 cm tall and weighing 36.4 kg. She was almost ready to her playful nature quickly endeared her to researchers, who noticed how much she enjoyed interactive hunting games. and two other porpoises.
Anyone who met “No. 1575” was immediately impressed by its beauty. However, its real journey was just the beginning. The Lenovo team was determined to prepare the land for him, with the intention of releasing him to enter the Yangtze River as soon as he is ready.
Rewilding: The Journey Home
Recovery is not easy. “No. 1575” began his rehabilitation training in the Hubei Yangtze Xinluo Section Baiji National Nature Reserve. This step was important: to teach him to adapt to the natural conditions of the river. He had to learn how to find food, navigate water and avoid dangers that might arise without human help.
The training was solid, and Lenovo’s support made a big difference. They provide not only financial assistance but also the use of AI technology.
We have provided AI PCs, which include a basic AI assistant with advanced information processing capabilities, to support porpoise research and early defense, as well as to analyze the role of AI in conserving biodiversity.
This combination of nature and technology ensured that “No. 1575” he got the best possible arrangement for his release from the country.
A Festival of Hope
Lenovo and the conservation center held a solemn ceremony called “AI Guardianship, Porpoises Leaping in the Yangtze.” At this event, Lenovo received an official adoption certificate and presented a special image of “No. 1575”, along with the original equipment. They also launched a nationwide competition to name him, they invite the public to be a part of this conservation story.
The ceremony was not just a ritual; it was a commitment to the future. It marked the beginning of a journey where technology meets nature, promising a bright future for “No. 1575” and his brand.
Extensive Work
Lenovo’s adoption of “No. 1575” is an important chapter in “Chasing the Yangtze Finless Porpoise,” an ambitious project launched in 2023 in collaboration with the China National Geographic Channel. The project focuses on the recovery of the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. Endless and ecological health of the Yangtze River.Lenovo is actively involved in the protection of biodiversity along the river, contributing to public education and conservation efforts.
“Chasing the Yangtze Finless Porpoise” creates the world’s first porpoise watching guide, map and guide of the Yangtze near completion. Lenovo has also provided AI PCs and smart devices with advanced AI technology to support scientific research and early conservation efforts.
As the first porpoise adoption company with a dedicated recovery strategy, Lenovo is setting new standards in primitive conservation and the recovery of wild populations. Wang DingChairman of the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation and Researcher of the Institute of Aquatic Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), says, “We are looking forward to the return of ‘No. 1575’ to the Yangtze River to contribute to wake up wild devils!”
Go Ahead
As “No. 1575” succeeds in its natural environment, Lenovo remains committed to supporting it. The company’s involvement in its return is not only the company’s responsibility; it includes Lenovo’s commitment to delivering smart technology that builds a brighter, more sustainable future for our customers, our colleagues, our communities and our planet.
The story of “No. 1575” and Lenovo is not just a story of adoption; it is a story of hope, perseverance, and the unyielding spirit of conservation. As Lenovo continues to combine technology and care for environment, the future looks promising “No. 1575” and countless other creatures that call the Yangtze River their home.
